The FDA said it worked with pharma companies to prevent more than 200 drug shortages last year. However, the regulator still grappled with a steady stream of supply issues affecting medications ranging from amoxicillin to Adderall.
In a report that was recently made available, and that the FDA is required to put out, the agency cited several reasons for the 49 drug shortages it reported in 2022, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the ensuing disruption to the supply chain, manufacturers having quality and capacity issues, rising demand for some medications, and an aggressive flu and RSV season that further strained the supply chain. About 1,300 potential shortages were reported by 150 companies last year.
