For lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, Wednesday’s congressional hearings about the Change Healthcare cyberattack turned into an airing of grievances against Change’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group.
“It is time to break up UnitedHealth,” proclaimed Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass). While in the House hearing, Rep. Buddy Carter, a pharmacist and Republican from Georgia, hauled out a posterboard depicting UnitedHealth and its many subsidiaries, trying to illustrate the company’s outsize influence in the country’s health care sector.
“Let me assure you that I’m going to continue to work to bust this up,” he warned UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty, who was the sole witness in both the Senate Finance and House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearings.
