Texas surgeon Eithan Haim, MD, has been charged with allegedly violating the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) when he leaked information about Texas Children’s Hospital continuing its gender-affirming care program after it said it had been halted. (Houston Public Media)

Former NFL team doctor Brandon Mines, MD, is suing his former employers, the Atlanta Falcons and Emory University, alleging racial discrimination and retaliation. Mines charges that the team and the university spread false statements about him, including that he missed a brain tumor in an NFL player. (Daily Beast)

Former New York nurse practitioner Julie DeVuono was sentenced to 840 hours of community service and 5 years of probation for selling fake COVID vaccine cards. (CBS NY)

Massachusetts psychiatrist Gustavo Kinrys, MD, was sentenced to 99 months in prison for billing insurers for more than $19 million in mental health treatments he never delivered, according to federal prosecutors. Kinrys reportedly spent $2.1 million of his reimbursement on a home in Nantucket and $600,000 on high-end jewelry.

CityMD will pay more than $12 million to resolve charges that it submitted claims for COVID testing to a federal program for the uninsured for patients who did indeed have health insurance, federal prosecutors said.

Oregon-based Legacy Health has settled for an undisclosed amount with the parents of a burn victim who sued after an emergency technician took pictures of their son’s severely burned body and distributed them to others. (The Oregonian)
