FDA approves first over-the-counter birth control pill, expected to hit shelves in 2024

The FDA has ap­proved the first over-the-counter birth con­trol pill, Per­ri­go’s Opill, clear­ing the way for con­sumers to eas­i­ly ac­cess the con­tra­cep­tive at drug stores, con­ve­nience stores and on­line.

The drug will hit shelves in ear­ly 2024, Per­ri­go’s glob­al VP for women’s health Frédérique Wel­gryn said in a me­dia brief­ing Thurs­day morn­ing. Wel­gryn de­clined to com­ment on the an­tic­i­pat­ed price but said more in­for­ma­tion will be avail­able in the com­ing months.
