A hacker leaked millions of 23andMe users’ data, and the leak of ancestry data could have implications on health info

Con­sumer ge­net­ics test­ing gi­ant 23andMe is ex­pe­ri­enc­ing a ma­jor da­ta leak.

A hack­er pub­lished records of four mil­lion users on­line last Tues­day, claim­ing the dataset con­tains in­for­ma­tion on the wealth­i­est peo­ple liv­ing in the US and West­ern Eu­rope, TechCrunch re­port­ed. This is the lat­est wave of re­port­ed leaks af­ter 23andMe an­nounced ear­li­er this month that hack­ers got user da­ta by ac­cess­ing ac­counts that had com­pro­mised pass­words. The hack­er used da­ta com­piled from a tool 23andMe’s users can opt in­to, re­veal­ing pro­file in­for­ma­tion about users with Ashke­nazi Jew­ish and Chi­nese her­itage.
