  • Nabla, the company developing Nabla Copilot, the leading ambient AI assistant for clinicians, today announced it has partnered with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) to roll out Nabla Copilot to their pediatric specialists after a successful four-week pilot program.
  • Nabla closely collaborated with CHLA’s clinical team to tailor specific capabilities, ensuring that Copilot effectively met the unique requirements of pediatrics in a hospital setting. The top-ranked children’s hospital in California, CHLA performs more than 15,000 surgeries and conducts more than 700,000 patient visits annually.

Enhancing Pediatric Care: Nabla’s Tailored Solutions for CHLA

A recent survey examining the mental health and well-being of physicians revealed that pediatrics ranked as the fourth-highest medical specialty experiencing burnout. This heightened burnout is attributed to a nationwide shortage of pediatric specialists, compounded by burdensome administrative tasks. It’s estimated that for every hour spent with patients, pediatricians must devote an additional two hours to administrative work, often extending beyond regular clinical hours. The repercussions of high burnout rates include diminished job satisfaction and an increased likelihood of leaving the profession.

Nabla collaborated with CHLA to address their physician preferences and fulfill the needs of their patient population by implementing the following measures:

1. Customized Templates: Nabla developed tailored note templates specifically catering to CHLA’s pediatric setting, ensuring accuracy in recording patient-reported facts and noting the presence of accompanying individuals during encounters. Additionally, CHLA practitioners can personalize these templates further using Nabla Copilot’s custom instructions feature.

2. Multi-speaker Functionality: Nabla enabled Copilot to capture the voices of multiple individuals in the examination room, including parents or guardians speaking on behalf of pediatric patients.

3. Patient Instructions: Following each encounter, Nabla Copilot automatically generates patient instructions alongside clinical notes, offering a summary of next steps for the patient and their family. Practitioners at CHLA can now choose to address these instructions to either the patient’s parent or directly to the patient, enhancing support tailored to CHLA’s context.

4. Spanish Language Support: To accommodate CHLA’s Spanish-speaking patients and families, Nabla Copilot offers bilingual support in English and Spanish. Physicians can select the desired language before the consultation, with Copilot generating detailed clinical notes in English and patient instructions in Spanish for families to take home.

5. Ambient Dot Phrase: Introducing an ambient dot phrase feature, Nabla aims to reduce additional administrative burdens. Pediatric specialists can vocalize custom trigger expressions to automatically insert predefined content into patient notes.

6. EHR Integration: Nabla is developing an integration with CHLA’s EHR system, Cerner, aligning with its agnostic approach to EHR integrations.

CHLA, like many healthcare providers, upholds stringent policies to safeguard patient privacy and security. They selected Nabla Copilot for its high levels of confidentiality and compliance with privacy regulations. As a certified SOC 2 ambient AI assistant, Nabla Copilot stores all transcripts and summaries locally on physicians’ computers, ensuring the utmost privacy. Nabla does not retain any customer data.
