What You Should Know:
– A new organization dedicated to accelerating the creation of smart hospitals has been established: the Alliance for Smart Healthcare Excellence (the Alliance).
– The non-profit organization will champion the Smart Hospital Maturity Model (SHMM), a framework designed to guide hospitals in their adoption and utilization of advanced technologies.
Smart Hospital Maturity Model (SHMM)
The SHMM, originally conceived by care.ai (now part of Stryker) and developed with CHIME, provides a roadmap for hospitals to assess their progress in becoming “smart hospitals.” The model evaluates three key domains:
- Humans: Patients, clinicians, and support staff.
- Environments: Clinical care spaces.
- Processes: Workflow optimization.
A comprehensive survey, developed with input from a national panel of experts, drives the SHMM. Over 170 hospitals have already participated in the survey, which consists of 89 questions designed to assess a hospital’s technological readiness and position within the maturity model.
The Alliance’s Mission
The Alliance aims to unite healthcare providers and industry partners to drive advancements in smart care technologies. Its key objectives include:
- Promoting the SHMM: Making the survey and model widely available to hospitals.
- Developing Resources: Creating professional resources to support the implementation and utilization of smart care technologies.
- Fostering Collaboration: Bringing together healthcare providers and industry partners to share best practices and accelerate innovation.
- Improving Care Delivery: Ultimately, helping hospitals leverage technology to improve care delivery and optimize operations.
Leadership and Governance
The Alliance launches under the leadership of H. Stephen Lieber as CEO, with Chakri Toleti (Founder & CEO of care.ai) and industry veteran Bruce Brandes as founding Board members. The organization is actively recruiting additional board members and a Board of Advisors to provide expert guidance and support its mission.
“Our vision when we launched the SHMM earlier this year was for industry leaders to help define the smart hospital and subsequently assess current state and align on the journey ahead across peer health systems”, said Chakri Toleti, Founder & CEO of care.ai, now Vice President of Digital Innovation at Stryker. “To optimize adoption and ensure comprehensive objectivity, we are excited for this vision to be fulfilled through this new, independent, nonprofit organization”.
Preliminary Results and Next Steps
Preliminary results from the SHMM survey are being shared at the CHIME Fall Forum in San Diego, providing insights into the current state of smart hospital adoption. Hospitals interested in evaluating their own technological readiness and participating in the SHMM can register to complete the survey at smarthospital.ai.The formation of the Alliance for Smart Healthcare Excellence marks a significant step forward in the journey towards creating smarter, more efficient, and patient-centered hospitals. By providing a clear framework and valuable resources, the Alliance is poised to play a key role in accelerating the adoption of transformative technologies in healthcare.
