Bernie Sanders wants to add price caps to therapies developed with BARDA, CDC funds

De­moc­rats and Re­pub­li­cans are cur­rent­ly wrestling with how to reau­tho­rize the Pan­dem­ic and All-Haz­ards Pre­pared­ness Act from 2006, with House De­moc­rats al­ready up­set that drug short­age help like­ly won’t be in­clud­ed while Sen­ate health com­mit­tee chair Bernie Sanders (I-VT) looks to add new price caps for drugs de­vel­oped with funds from the fed­er­al gov­ern­ment.

Un­der the sub­ti­tle, “Chair Sanders Staff Pro­pos­al,” the new Sen­ate draft reau­tho­riza­tion would add a cap to the price of any new ther­a­py, drug or tech de­vel­oped with fi­nan­cial sup­port from BAR­DA or the CDC at what­ev­er the low­est price (on the com­mer­cial mar­ket or pro­cured by the fed­er­al gov­ern­ment) for that prod­uct in Cana­da, France, Japan, Ger­many, Italy, or the UK.
