Biden taps Vanderbilt’s Kimryn Rathmell to succeed Bertagnolli as the NIH’s cancer chief

Pres­i­dent Joe Biden se­lect­ed Van­der­bilt Uni­ver­si­ty’s med­i­cine chair Kim­ryn Rath­mell to serve as the next di­rec­tor of the Na­tion­al Can­cer In­sti­tute, the White House an­nounced Fri­day.

The sec­ond woman to helm the in­sti­tute, Rath­mell will suc­ceed new­ly mint­ed NIH chief Mon­i­ca Bertag­nol­li, who was con­firmed by the Sen­ate last week. Rath­mell comes to the NCI from an ex­pan­sive ca­reer as a physi­cian-sci­en­tist spe­cial­iz­ing in kid­ney can­cer.
