Califf’s alma mater receives $50M FDA award to establish new research center

FDA is award­ing $50 mil­lion to two promi­nent North Car­oli­na uni­ver­si­ties to es­tab­lish a reg­u­la­to­ry sci­ence re­search cen­ter — and the lat­est in­sti­tu­tion to re­ceive an award is FDA Com­mis­sion­er Robert Califf’s al­ma mater and for­mer em­ploy­er Duke Uni­ver­si­ty.

Duke, along­side the Uni­ver­si­ty of North Car­oli­na at Chapel Hill, will re­ceive $50 mil­lion over five years to es­tab­lish the Re­search Tri­an­gle Cen­ter of Ex­cel­lence in Reg­u­la­to­ry Sci­ence and In­no­va­tion (CER­SI). The ini­tia­tive al­so in­cludes col­lab­o­ra­tions with North Car­oli­na State Uni­ver­si­ty and North Car­oli­na Cen­tral Uni­ver­si­ty, which is a his­tor­i­cal­ly Black col­lege and uni­ver­si­ty. The fund­ing will be avail­able on Sept. 1.
