What You Should Know:
– EHR leader Epic announced the expansion of its Application Program Interfaces (APIs) for healthcare app developers.
– These APIs, available at no cost, will enable developers to access a more comprehensive view of the patient, supporting the latest standards in data exchange.
Enhanced Interoperability for Personalized Care
The expanded APIs are designed to support version 3 of the United States Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI v3). This allows healthcare apps to receive critical data elements, including tribal affiliation, disability status, caregiver relationships, and preferred language. Additionally, the APIs facilitate the exchange of interventions related to Social Drivers of Health (SDOH), such as referrals to homeless shelters.
Free Access for App Developers
Epic has made these APIs freely available to app developers through open.epic.com, its public, self-service library of over 700 industry-standard interoperability technologies. This platform, launched in 2014, has facilitated over 500 billion data exchanges in the past year alone.
Commitment to Interoperability Standards
Epic’s early rollout of USCDI v3, well ahead of the December 2025 federal requirement, underscores the company’s commitment to interoperability standards. Epic also supports other key initiatives, such as the USCDI+Cancer program and the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA).
Epic plans to further expand its APIs on open.epic to support future versions of USCDI, ensuring ongoing compliance with evolving interoperability standards
“Reliable access to Social Drivers of Health will make a real difference in people’s lives. As an example use case, a health coach app could proactively connect a patient to a food bank or transportation assistance program based on data that the app can now receive,” said Mike Pontillo, Implementation Executive at Epic.
