Exclusive: Dimension leads $40M round for lab automation company Automata Technologies

As life sci­ences com­pa­nies seek new ways to gen­er­ate enor­mous amounts of ex­per­i­men­tal da­ta, Lon­don-based lab au­toma­tion play­er Au­toma­ta Tech­nolo­gies has reaped an­oth­er $40 mil­lion to ex­pand its foot­print.

CEO Mostafa El­Sayed and his co-founder Suryansh Chan­dra didn’t set out to build a lab au­toma­tion com­pa­ny. Both ar­chi­tects, who worked to­geth­er at Za­ha Ha­did’s re­search lab, start­ed the com­pa­ny to de­sign a desk­top ro­bot arm that can be pur­chased for un­der $10,000 and pro­grammed to per­form a wide range of tasks. Their ini­tial cus­tomers ranged from elec­tron­ics and au­to­mo­tive man­u­fac­tur­ers to food and bev­er­age pro­duc­ers.
