GAO directs ARPA-H to finalize plan for handling duplicate research

HHS’ newest bio­med­ical re­search arm has yet to fi­nal­ize its char­ter for its ad­vi­so­ry com­mit­tee or ex­plain how mem­bers will put their heads to­geth­er to pre­vent un­nec­es­sary du­pli­cate re­search, a re­port from the Gov­ern­ment Ac­count­abil­i­ty Of­fice pub­lished Thurs­day con­clud­ed.

Con­gress es­tab­lished the Ad­vanced Re­search Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) in 2022 specif­i­cal­ly to spear­head bio­med­ical re­search projects and get them over the fin­ish line. As part of the agency’s es­tab­lish­ment, which is housed with­in the NIH, it was tasked with con­ven­ing an In­ter­a­gency Ad­vi­so­ry Com­mit­tee com­posed of eight fed­er­al agen­cies to en­sure that ARPA-H-fund­ed re­search is free of un­nec­es­sary du­pli­ca­tion.
