Georgia lawmakers send letter to FDA over continued cancer drug shortage

Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and eight other Georgia lawmakers on Thursday asked the FDA for more transparency over the shortage of cancer drugs like cisplatin and carboplatin.

Cisplatin, a standard treatment for various types of cancer, has been in shortage since February. This has cascaded to other cancer drugs, such as carboplatin, which is also in short supply.

The shortage stems from an FDA inspection in 2022 that led to the shutdown of Intas Pharmaceuticals’ manufacturing plant in Ahmedabad, India. Intas supplies half of the cisplatin in the US market. Another inspection of the same plant in May by the FDA revealed multiple cleaning and data infractions.
