Georgia lawmakers send letter to FDA over continued cancer drug shortage

Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and eight oth­er Geor­gia law­mak­ers on Thurs­day asked the FDA for more trans­paren­cy over the short­age of can­cer drugs like cis­platin and car­bo­platin.

Cis­platin, a stan­dard treat­ment for var­i­ous types of can­cer, has been in short­age since Feb­ru­ary. This has cas­cad­ed to oth­er can­cer drugs, such as car­bo­platin, which is al­so in short sup­ply.

The short­age stems from an FDA in­spec­tion in 2022 that led to the shut­down of In­tas Phar­ma­ceu­ti­cals’ man­u­fac­tur­ing plant in Ahmed­abad, In­dia. In­tas sup­plies half of the cis­platin in the US mar­ket. An­oth­er in­spec­tion of the same plant in May by the FDA re­vealed mul­ti­ple clean­ing and da­ta in­frac­tions.
