The Oprah effect is back, and this time the celebrity mogul addressed the stigma associated with obesity and the success of GLP-1 medicines in a new TV special.
Oprah Winfrey produced the hour-long show on ABC on Monday. It took aim at the shame tied to weight and obesity, and raised further questions about coverage of GLP-1 medications like Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s Zepbound.
The show had a mix of guests, including patients, executives from both companies, and WeightWatchers CEO Sima Sistani. Winfrey, who served on the board of WeightWatchers until last month, shared her own story about being mocked in the media for gaining weight and why she chose to take one of the “so-called miracle medications.” (She didn’t disclose which drug she’s using.)
