J&J to close its Leiden vaccine unit following wider infectious disease cuts

John­son & John­son’s Janssen plans to close down its vac­cine and in­fec­tious dis­ease unit in Lei­den, the Nether­lands, ac­cord­ing to lo­cal news out­lets.

The Lei­den site once man­u­fac­tured J&J’s Covid-19 vac­cine be­fore it halt­ed pro­duc­tion ear­ly last year, ac­cord­ing to the New York Times. A few months af­ter that, the FDA cut off J&J’s vac­cine in the US with some lim­it­ed ex­cep­tions fol­low­ing cas­es of a dis­or­der called TTS (throm­bo­sis with throm­bo­cy­tope­nia), in which blood clots de­vel­op along­side low blood platelet lev­els.
