A whistleblower has accused device maker Medtronic of bribing staff at a small Veterans Affairs hospital in Kansas to buy its devices instead of the competition and to “purchase grossly excessive inventory.” The products were later used in medically unnecessary procedures on veterans, according to alleged whistleblower Tom Schroeder, a former manager at competitor Becton Dickinson. The suit became public at the end of 2022 when the government decided not to intervene in the case. Medtronic has said the allegations are false. (CNBC)
Francis Lagattuta, MD, and his company Lags Medical will pay $11.4 million to settle allegations that he submitted millions in false claims to public payors for medically unnecessary skin biopsies, spinal cord stimulation surgeries, and urine drug testing, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.
The jury in the trial of British nurse Lucy Letby, who is accused of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill 10 others, has retired to consider its verdict. (BBC)

The man who raped a 9-year-old Ohio girl whose case garnered national attention was sentenced to life in prison, though Gerson Fuentes can seek parole after 25 to 30 years. Indiana physician Caitlin Bernard, MD, performed an abortion on the girl, who traveled out-of-state because of Ohio’s “heartbeat” abortion ban. Bernard was recently reprimanded by Indiana’s medical board for allegedly revealing sensitive patient information. (AP via ABC News)
