What You Should Know:
– Philips and Mayo Clinic have announced a research collaboration to advance magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for cardiac applications with artificial intelligence (AI).
– The strategic partnership will leverage the power of AI and clinical expertise to improve operational efficiency, shorten exam times, and expand access to cardiac MRI for more patients.
AI-Driven Efficiency in Cardiac MRI
The collaboration will combine Mayo Clinic’s proprietary AI technology with Philips’ AI-driven solutions to reduce MRI scan times and enhance workflow efficiency for radiologists. This has the potential to:
- Reduce patient wait times: Shorter scans can lead to faster diagnosis and treatment.
- Improve productivity: Enable healthcare professionals to perform more scans in less time, addressing staffing shortages and increasing access to care.
- Enhance diagnostic accuracy: AI can assist in image analysis and interpretation, potentially improving diagnostic accuracy and confidence.
- Reduce operator dependency: AI-powered tools can help standardize image acquisition and reduce variability, making complex cardiac MRI exams more accessible to less experienced radiographers.
“From the patient perspective, MRI scans can be stressful. A complex cardiac MRI exam can take over an hour, which is often challenging for patients who suffer from claustrophobia inside the bore of the scanner, find it difficult to lie still or are unable to hold their breath for the required time,” said Ioannis Panagiotelis, Ph.D., Business Leader of MRI at Philips. “By applying AI at every stage of a cardiac MRI exam, we intend to expand access and greatly improve the patient experience, increase departmental efficiency, and deliver the detailed diagnostic information needed for optimal patient outcomes.”
