Cybersecurity has been a top issue over the past several years for the healthcare industry overall, as cyber attackers have targeted hospitals and sensitive patient health information. The medical device industry faced its own share of cybersecurity challenges in 2023, showing that medtechs and devices are vulnerable if not adequately protected.
Henry Schein’s data breach was one of the industry’s biggest cybersecurity stories of the year. The company has spent months managing an incident that forced it to take some systems offline and exposed the information of more than 29,000 people, including some of its suppliers. Henry Schein was forced to lower its sales forecast for the year because of the breach.
Other cybersecurity developments this year ranged from industry guidance from the Food and Drug Administration to vulnerabilities in Becton Dickinson infusion pumps.
